Cardiac Center

Our long term goal had been the establishment of a Cardiac Center. We had envisaged a stand alone facility containing state-of-the-art equipment for interventional cardiology. We have had to realistically abandon the plan because of the recent proposal by Goa Medical College (GMC) to initiate a cardiac surgery center. That being the case, the interventional cardiology procedures we had anticipated performing in our Cardiac Center, should more appropriately be performed by the new GMC Cardiac Surgery unit.

We can now close that chapter of our long term goals, and concentrate on our core mission to provide a clinic equipped with latest equipment for stress testing, and echocardiography. To provide cardiac screening EKG’s and preventive care teachings on cardiac health. To extend that outreach into the villages of Goa via our link to Boni Dias and the ‘Healing Touch’ bus.

The GAHF felt that the justification for a clinic to provide cardiac screening and evaluation, as well as teaching preventive cardiac health, was provided by the following statistics:

1. In a study the reputed British Medical Journal "Lancet" claimed that by year 2010 India will contribute 60% of the total number of cases of heart disease in the world.
2. Mortality data obtained from the Registrar General of India showed that in 1998 cardiovascular disease contributed 27% of the country’s deaths with Goa being one of the four States with the highest incidence.
3. A majority of deaths in Goa State are lifestyle related. Of the 6 to 7 persons who reportedly die in Goa every day, cardiovascular disease continues to be the highest killer.

On May 14, 2011 we had a gala charity ball. We were able to raise $75,350.

Our second gala charity ball was held on September 21, 2013 at the Ukrainian Cultural Center, Somerset, NJ. We raised $111,048. The proceeds from both charity events will be used to have an ICU, operate the clinic and to provide affordable cardiac care.
